Balance your Legs

BALANCE YOUR POWER
Standard squats don’t work your legs equally, states a new study presented at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s annual conference. Computer analysis revealed that during a squat, one leg is burdened with 6 percent more of the load than the other. The researchers aren’t sure what causes this imbalance, but stress that you shouldn’t swear off this muscle builder. Instead, vary your routine with single-leg squats, lunges, and stepups. This ensures that you’ll engage the muscles of each leg equally.

Lower your carb

The best combination for chiseling your abs: dumbbells and a fork. University of Connecticut researchers found that men who lifted weights and ate a low-carb diet lost 17 pounds of fat and gained 2 pounds of muscle in just 12 weeks. What’s more, the low-carb dieters cut twice as much lard as lifters who followed a low-fat plan. “Restricting carbohydrates forces your body to burn fat instead of sugar, while lifting spurs muscle growth,” says

She flirts means she want to tackle youlah, bodoh

She may be giving you mixed signals. In a University of Texas poll, 64 percent of women admitted to “sexually teasing” a man. Motives varied, but a themeemerged: If she teases, she’s probably interested in knowing you better.

READ HER BODY LANGUAGE

The conversation is flowing, but is she really into you? Try shifting your stance and watch to see if she does the same. Women show attraction by mirroring your moves, report Dutch researchers. In the study, scientists observed pairs of strangers flirting and found that the more attracted a woman was to a man, the more she would unconsciously copy his fidgeting and posture changes.

“Mimicking is an automatic response when we like someone, and it acts like a social glue,” says study author Ischa van Straaten, Ph.D.(c). And the process works bothways. So if she seems cold, subtly mirror her body language—it may help her warm up to you.

Dogs and babies

Several evenings a week, I volunteer at the Naperville Humane Society. It is a very sad and common request to be asked to rescue a dog becausethere is a new baby in the house. One of the most frustrating things isthat in the majority of these cases, the dog had a problem before the babycame and the owners didn't do anything about it. So the poor dog is re-homedneedlessly when a bit of preparation would have prevented it.It is a rare luxury in life to know in advance that a major change is going tohappen to your circumstances.
In these cases, you have up to nine months in which to prepare the dog. Please, do it!The main points to consider:The dog won't be welcome to sleep on your bed or even in your bedroom.you don't want a dog who jumps on and off of the furniture when it pleases, it could leap straight on top of the baby one day.Your dog must be safe to take toys and chews from.Your dog must respond to basic commands properly. You can't be carrying a baby around and have a dog who completely ignores you and won't move out of your way.
A dog that jumps up at you could easily injure a carried baby.Dogs must learn to "go away" on command so that they don't come up to youwhen you have a baby on your knee and put a paw straight on top of the baby or drop a toy on it.Dogs are scent oriented and fascinated by new smells. Send something home from the hospital immediately that smells of the baby so that when the baby actually comes, it isn't so much of a novelty.
There are times when you might need to leave a room with the baby and leave the dog behind. Make sure your dog already accepts being left in one room whilst you are elsewhere in the house.Allow the dog to inspect all the new items you bring home.Common sense, really, but so many people just think of how pleasant their dog is, how sociable it is with kids, and forget the practicalities of having a dog and baby together.
If your dog has any sort of temperament problem before your new baby comes, it will be much worse when there is a new baby in your home. So use the luxury of knowing that baby is coming and be prepared. The dog will not understand that suddenly when you walk through the door with your baby he now cannot jump up at you or leap on the sofa.
Please don't be afraid to ask for help. What puts a lot of owners off is asking for help when it has any sort of obedience problem. They fear being told to re-home the dog or put it to sleep. In fact, this is unlikely, but even if this is the outcome, you wouldn't want to be responsible for ducking out on the issue now and then later your baby or dog pays the price.

Alpha male

Alpha behaviors

Here are some practical suggestions on dog care that will help reinforce your alpha position. Most of these are things all dog owners should do anyway. Much of the following is based on a handout by Terry Ryan (Pet-People Partnership, Washington State University).

Train your dog if you haven't done so already, or have done only a little. We recommend personalized training that recognizes your dog's individual temperament.Dog should understand that they depend on you, the leader. No free-feeding. Feed once or twice a day and take the food away after 10-15 minutes.

It should be very clear that you are the food-giver."Nothing in life is free." Treats must be earned. Require at least a sit or a simple trick every time your dog receives a treat.Leaders eat first. Sit down, eat your breakfast or dinner, and only then give dog its food.Leaders go first. When going through a door, gate, or other opening, you go first.

Have the dog do a sit-wait or down-wait. If the dog doesn't know wait/stay yet, block the entrance with your body to keep the dog from rushing past you.Leaders control where and when. When you send the dog out and you're not going, have the dog sit and wait; then let the dog go when you say. Don't open the door until he's sitting properly.

Leaders control territory. Is the dog lying in the middle of the hallway and you have to step around him? Is he sitting in your favorite chair and you sit elsewhere instead? Make him move. It's YOUR territory. Nudge dog in hall with your foot (no kicking!) so he moves.

Lead him off the chair, then sit there. And, if the dog is really alpha, work on going out of your way to make him move from where he is. Remember to keep it non-confrontational, especially when you are still establishing your pack position. If he starts arguing, save this method for later.Leaders mean what they say. Avoid giving a command you can't enforce. When you give a command, enforce it. "Sit!" (low firm tone, no begging, squeaking, yelling).

Issue no further commands if the dog doesn't obey. Instead, use proper training techniques (e.g., scoop the butt under) to help the dog with the desired behavior — then praise liberally.Leaders are winners. Don't play any game you can't win. Tug-of-war seems like great fun but every time the dog gets the rope, he is thinking, "I win! I am in charge!"

Don't play that game with any dog. Don't rough-house a pushy dog. If you do play games with toys, make sure you, not the dog, determine when the game is over. End the game before the dog is tired of it. Put the toy out of reach then, don't leave it with the dog or on the floor. If your dog loves to fetch, make your dog bring the ball to the leader, not three ft away so you have to step forward.

The dog has to bring the toy to your feet, or to your hand, promptly drop it and back away or drop in your hand when you request it. No bring, no play.Leaders also end affection. Give your dog lots of love and attention but be attuned to the pushy dog who demands it constantly. It might be an alpha move.

If a pushy dog keeps asking for something, time after time (play ball or keep petting me), refuse. Place the toy out of reach and ignore requests. The same goes for pets who demand constant petting. Ignore the requests. For pushy dogs, no sleeping on your bed.

That makes him consider himself an equal, not a subordinate.NEUTER! All those rushing hormones don't help at all.Place your hand lightly over the dog's muzzle. Don't grab, just hold for a few seconds.

Top 5 : Inexpensive Or Free Date Ideas

Number 5
Teach her something
If you can teach a woman something that she has always wanted to do, she will see you as “her hero” from day one. Take her surfing, teach her how to paint or grab some boxing gloves and show her how to throw a punch. She’ll remember you forever -- and you’re sure to have a blast.

Number 4
Keep it casual
If you insist on taking her to a restaurant, don’t go the dinner route. Instead, grab a desert or take her to a place that serves up unique, exotic drinks. You’ll spend less money, show her a new experience and, most importantly, you won’t come off like you're “trying too hard.”

Number 3
Be a kid again
Bring out her fun, carefree side by taking her to a park to swing on the swings. Get behind her and push her for bonus points, then put her on the merry-go-round and spin it around as fast as you can (just make sure she doesn’t fall off or start to feel nauseous).

Number 2
Enjoy the drama
For a night of stimulating conversation, invite her over to watch the latest hot reality TV show. All women love reality TV, and with all of the drama you’ll be watching, great conversation is guaranteed.

Number 1
Get sneaky
If you’re feeling adventurous and you sense she might be up for some mischief, put together a “mission” to sneak into the pool area of a trendy hotel. If you get busted, you’ll have an awesome story to tell. And if you don’t? You get to see her in a bikini.

Healthy Summer Fruits & Veggies

So visit your local farmer’s market with cash in hand to pick up some healthy summer fruits and veggies. It’ll be good for you.

fruits

Blueberries:
Doctors call them “brainberries.” OK, maybe they don’t, but they should because blueberries have been shown to boost brainpower. Researchers at Tufts University in Boston found that a diet rich in blueberries prevented dementia and boosted memory in rats as they aged. So, when you’re berry shopping, go organic; berries are thin-skinned and tend to soak up pesticides.

Cherries:
I cannot tell a lie: Cherries are bursting with flavor and high in vitamin C. And despite their role in a great presidential American legend, they were first cultivated in ancient Persia.Peaches: The peach is native to China and was probably first cultivated there thousands of years ago. Since then, many varieties have been raised, but none are of the giant variety. They are tasty, but not a significant source of any one vitamin or mineral.

Raspberries:

Raspberries can be found all over the world and the plants from which they spring go by many different names. Like most berries, they are very high in antioxidants, the chemicals that keep your body from falling apart at the molecular level. And they taste good too.

Growing young gardeners

The Junior Journey Program recently introduced a group of children to the plant world of flowers, trees, fruits and vegetables. In the scores of gardens scattered about the museum grounds, kids viewed the native plants, grasses and flowers before donning gloves and grabbing various yard tools to try the age-old practice of gardening.

Leading the kids through the gardening class were Journey Museum Teen Team members Brandon Fleming and Alex Marrs. Fleming presented a PowerPoint session on gardening as well as gardening tips for transplanting plant sets into garden beds. Marrs, 17, acting as an assistant, helped the kids gather up their gear, garden tools and miscellaneous materials needed to do a plant project.Kayla Lindblom, 10, wasn’t sure of the kind of plants that she was working with, but she was anxious to get to work.“I have no clue what it’s called other than a bedding plant,” she said.

Pink flowers, gall, forsythia and herbicides

Q. I received a gift plant labeled spathiphyllum. When I got it, it was flowering with lovely pink flowers. I have had spathiphyllum before but never one with pink blooms. Is this a different variety, and does it require special care?

A. I think your plant was mislabeled. To my knowledge, pink is not a color found in spathiphyllum flowers. I'm guessing that you have one of the smaller cultivars of anthurium, which have become more common in the mass market recently. The care is the same as for spathiphyllum. Don't allow it to dry out completely, and keep it out of direct light. Feed it once a month with half-strength fertilizer, and keep the humidity as high as possible. You can summer it outdoors in a shady location.

Q. I have pond cypresses that have been covered with galls the past two years. I have not been able to find advice on preventing their future growth. Do you have any suggestions?

A. The galls are caused by a small midge. Although they are very noticeable, they do not weaken trees or cause any lasting damage. They are more prevalent on some bald cypress trees than others because of genetic differences in susceptibility. Parasitic wasps may provide some natural control for the midge in some parts of the country. The adult midges emerge from the galls in spring, so removing the galls and cleaning up debris under the tree will help in limiting future populations. I am not aware of any pesticide labeled specifically for control of this pest.

Q. I want to get rid of an ugly forsythia. If I cut off the canes, can I "paint" the stubs with an herbicide that will prevent it from resprouting? Will this damage future plantings in this area? I want to replace it with a nandina shrub.

A. There are a number of herbicides that work to kill plants when applied to the cut stumps. Most contain either triclopyr or glyphosate. Those containing triclopyr are generally more effective on a broader range of plants. Brush-B-Gon and Vinex are two such herbicides that have directions for treatment of a cut stump. You need just a small amount of herbicide, and its residual effect should last only a week.

Q. My goldfish plant has become too large and I want to replace it, but I can't find the same variety in local nurseries. Can you help?

A. Your goldfish plant could be any of several hybrids or species in the genus Nematanthus. They are among the easiest of gesneriads and make lovely hanging baskets.
